  • Building a Wedding Venue Ourselves

From ICU Shifts to Hill Country Dreams — How Wrenwood Ranch Got Its Start If you’ve followed us on Instagram or Facebook, you’ve seen the pretty moments—sunsets over the hill, wedding florals, the glow of string lights at golden hour. But behind the scenes? There were sideways AC units, late deliveries, storm delays, and lots of problem-solving with no blueprint. 🌿 The Hill Country Calling In May of 2020, while the world shut down, we showed up —buying land in the Texas Hill Country, unsure of how we’d fund a big venue dream. So we started small: one pet-friendly cottage at a time. The goal? Five cottages in the first year. Spoiler: it took four years to finish all seven. Between shipping delays (14 weeks just to get furniture 😳), slow help, and full-time jobs (I was still working ICU night shifts), we slowly built a place where people could escape, reconnect, and breathe. 🛌 Pet-Friendly Cottages, Built With Intention Every cottage was built with real guests in mind: step-free entrances, walk-in showers, nature views, and—yes—plenty of room for your dogs 🐶. We realized pretty early on that comfort, accessibility, and charm mattered more than trendy decor. Each cottage became a little chapter of our story—and a stepping stone toward our real dream: creating a full-fledged Texas Hill Country wedding and event venue . 🧠 Lessons We Learned Early We always thought we’d build the venue first, but life had other plans. We learned: Income matters before expansion Every delay is a lesson in disguise Local support is everything And maybe most importantly, we learned to ask better questions. 🥾 Real Talk This wasn’t easy. There were days we felt like quitting. We were managing bookings, guest cleans, social media, plumbing, framing, and raising a daughter—all while dreaming bigger. But if we can do this, anyone can. Seriously. FAQ: Why did you start with cottages instead of the venue? Because we had to generate income. Starting small gave us the foundation—literally and financially—to build toward the bigger dream. Have you ever wanted to build something from scratch? What’s the one dream you keep putting on hold? We say: don’t wait. The messy, unfiltered middle is where the good stuff happens 💪 ✨ Stay tuned for Blog 2—where we dive into the years of dreaming, designing, and almost giving up on this wild venue idea before it became The Legacy at Wrenwood Ranch. 👇 Learn more or book your stay in one of our cottages at www.wrenwoodranch.com

  • Creating Wrenwood Ranch Wedding Venue - Starting to bring the Vision to Life

How a Dream Becomes a Venue — The 10-Year Vision of The Legacy at Wrenwood Ranch They say everything starts with a dream—but we didn’t just dream it. We drew it. On graph paper. In notebooks. On the backs of receipts. We had sketches, magazine cutouts, venue inspiration folders, Pinterest boards, and conference brochures. Since 2011, long before Wrenwood Ranch was even a name, we were quietly dreaming of something more. What we didn’t realize was how long that dream would take—or how many times we’d be told “not yet.” 📐 When the Vision Was Too Big Before we ever set foot on Texas soil, we tried to bring our dream to life elsewhere. But between red tape and zoning nightmares, we were quoted $18,000 just to ask if we could build on a potential property—not buy it, not develop it, just ask . That’s when we knew: this wasn’t our forever place. We needed to go where dreams had space to breathe. That’s when the Texas Hill Country called us home. 🏡 Wrenwood Ranch: Land First, Venue Later In 2020, with the world shut down and hospitals overflowing, we bought the property that would become Wrenwood Ranch. I was still working ICU shifts. Chad was drawing up every line of the future on graph paper. We couldn’t afford to start with the big building, so we built income-generating cottages first. But the vision never left. We’d pull out the sketches and say “One day…” And then one day, our daughter got engaged—and the “someday” became now. 💒 Designing The Legacy Venue (Without Losing Our Minds) Here’s the funny part: Chad and I design very differently. I need to see it—colors, windows, flow. He sees beams, plumbing, and septic logistics. We fought over cardboard models. We redrew plans in the dirt.We asked each other: “What do you see that I don’t?” We knew we wanted: ✅ An indoor-outdoor space ✅ Beautiful flow for both ceremonies & receptions ✅ ADA-compliant, with thoughtful restrooms ✅ A nature-inspired backdrop ✅ Plenty of parking (but hidden views) We also knew we didn’t want: ❌ A massive space that felt cold or corporate ❌ A layout that created guest traffic jams ❌ A venue without soul 🌳 Where to Put the Building? We had four locations on the property we considered for the venue. One had the better view. One had the best parking access. One was more private. One was more central. We debated. We walked. We cried. We dreamed. We disagreed. We compromised. In the end, we found the one. And when we poured the concrete? That moment felt like the ground caught up with the dream. FAQ: How long did it take to design the venue layout? Technically...10 years. But from the moment we chose the final spot? Months of design tweaks, mock-ups, cardboard cutouts, and learning everything about engineering and ADA code. ✨ The Dream Was Always There Every event we ever hosted, every fundraiser we volunteered at, every friend’s wedding we helped with—it all led us here. We learned what worked. What didn’t. What guests loved. What made couples cry (in a good way). This wasn't just a venue design. It was a love letter to every event we’d ever witnessed. Next up: Blog 3 – What It Took to Actually Build The Legacy at Wrenwood Ranch Want to see where all that dreaming landed us? Explore the space and book your event at www.wrenwoodranch.com

That special weekend planted the seed for a dream to create a place where others could share the same unforgettable moments. From Dream to Reality Between 2011 and 2020, we ventured into the world of business and event planning, organizing various events—from nonprofit fundraisers to family gatherings—to see if this was truly the path we wanted to take. As we gained more experience, we felt more certain that creating a space like Wrenwood Ranch was where we were meant to be. Timing played a pivotal role in our journey. Our daughter was set to graduate high school in 2020, and we knew once that milestone passed, it would be the perfect time to take the leap. In November of 2019, we listed our dream home for sale, setting the wheels in motion for what would become the biggest adventure of our lives. A Leap of Faith Selling our home happened quickly, and before we knew it, we were packing up everything we could fit into a 20-foot U-Haul trailer. What didn’t fit, we gave away. We left behind a comfortable 2,600-square-foot home and moved into a 26-foot travel trailer on an undeveloped piece of land—with no power, water, or septic. It was daunting, but we were all in. Adapting to life in the Texas Hill Country was a crash course in patience and perseverance. Unlike in the city, where you can hire a contractor and have them show up within a week, we learned that out here, you might be waiting eight months or more for essential services. This meant rolling up our sleeves and doing much of the work ourselves, from clearing the land to building structures from the ground up. Shifting Plans & Hard Work Our initial plan was to build the event space first and then add accommodations later. But reality hit fast—we needed to generate income right away. So, we pivoted and began with the accommodations, focusing on building the cottages first. We are thrilled to say that now, after years of sweat and determination, our dream is becoming a reality. We’re proud to offer our cottages in the Texas Hill Country between Fredericksburg, Texas  and Johnson City, Texas. Our vacation rentals  are great for those looking to experience the beauty of the Texas Hill Country and all that it has to offer. The cottages or as many call them, cabins,  provide guests with a cozy and comfortable stay, perfect for a getaway. Whether you’re visiting for a family reunion, a wedding, coming to see the Texas Wild Flowers, a Winery or a peaceful retreat, our cottages  are an ideal choice, offering the perfect blend of comfort and convenience for exploring the Johnson City Texas area and Fredericksburg area . The first cottages are now welcoming guests, and in April 2025, Wrenwood Ranch will host its first wedding. As we look forward to offering more than just accommodations, we look to add space for connection, celebration, and unforgettable moments. We are excited for what’s to come.
